Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to install and maintain explosion barriers
   • Access, interpret and apply, install and maintain explosion barriers, documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment and protective clothing
   • Access, interpret and apply mine environmental data required to complete the allocated work
   • Obtain and prepare materials and resources required for work
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Install and maintain explosion barriers
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
   • Prepare worksite
   • Install barriers
   • Fill and maintain barriers
   • Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
   • Carry out barrier inspections

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of install and maintain explosion barriers operations including:

reading, interpreting, communicating and applying technical information

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues, potential hazards and risks

applying equipment/manual handling techniques

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

complying with environmental requirements

reading and interpreting mine plans

identifying work requirements

applying barrier construction processes and techniques

works effectively with others to undertake and complete install and maintain explosion barriers operations in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

resolving coordination requirements throughout work activities

demonstrates completion of installing and maintaining explosion barriers that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

applying construction techniques to barrier installation and maintenance including at least one (1) of the following types on three separate occasions;

stone dust

water

preparing materials and resources including at least three (3) of the following;

chains

eye bolts

hand tools

jacks

bolter drills and bits

level

tubs and frames

props

trays and purlins

bolts

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of installing and maintaining explosion barriers through:

reading, interpreting and applying mine operational procedures, layout and plan

types and applications of barriers

complying with barrier maintenance procedures

mine environmental requirements and constraints related to barrier construction
